About Matt Bromley

Matt Bromley is an experienced school and college leader, an education writer and consultant, and a teacher-trainer.

He is currently Group Director of Teaching and Learning for the Derby College Group and the DCET multi-academy trust.

Matt writes on education for various outlets including The Guardian, Headteacher Update, and Autus Education News. He writes a monthly column for SecEd magazine  where he is also a member of the editorial board.

Prior to this, Matt worked with Solutions for School as an education consultant and as a consultant headteacher and teacher-trainer with a number of other companies including Creative Education, CPD for Teachers, and The School INSET Company. He’s also been a GCSE and A Level examiner.

Matt was acting Headteacher of the highest performing comprehensive school in its authority and one of the top five most improved schools in England, a school judged ‘good with outstanding features’ under Ofsted’s new framework less than three years after being in ‘special measures’. During his tenure, the number of students achieving 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including in English and Maths went from 50% to 85%.  He has also been the Principal of a Studio School, the Deputy Headteacher of a small rural school (with responsibility for curriculum and timetable, self-evaluation and school improvement, and health and safety and the site), and the Assistant Headteacher of a large inner-city school (with responsibility for, amongst other areas, teaching and learning, and the achievement of pupils).

He has over fifteen years’ senior leadership experience in the public and private sectors. Prior to teaching, he was a senior manager in the telecoms industry; he has also worked in journalism.

He has an Honours degree in English Language and Literature, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education and the National Professional Qualification for Headship.

He is the author of several books for teachers – published by Autus Books – including the Amazon best-sellers ‘How to Become a School Leader’, ‘Leadership for Learning’, ‘Ofsted Thriving Not Surviving’, and ‘The IQ Myth‘. He edited the Amazon best-seller ‘SPaG Book: A Teacher’s Guide to Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar’.
